Profile:

Charl is a qualified attorney who has been practising for the past 33 years, specialising as a consultant in labour law and labour relations since the early 1980’s in most major industries, including metal, mining, chemical, manufacturing, hospitality, agriculture, transport, broadcasting and tourism.

His practice comprises, inter alia, all aspects of dispute resolution such as fact finding, negotiation, facilitation, mediation and arbitration at a wide variety of forums in both the public and private sectors.

Charl presented extensive courses in practical labour law and labour relations for various companies and institutions including the Institute for Personnel Management and universities such as Johannesburg, Stellenbosch and Pretoria. These courses include a course in alternative dispute resolution for managers. His Masters dissertation (1990) dealt with the implications of Aids in the workplace and his LLD thesis on the Lock-out in 1993 was the first on the topic. He was appointed professor extraordinarius by the Central University of Technology for his contribution in the field of practical labour law in South Africa in 2000.

Charl deals on a daily basis with practical labour issues such as collective bargaining and agreements, discipline, industrial action, conflict resolution, training, safety and opinion work. He is based in Kimberley, but practises countrywide.

Charl also farms with sheep, cattle and game and has a keen interest in environmental management issues and conflict arising from the conservation and protection of scarce resources, game and the environment.

Charl is based in Kimberley.
