Coen served in the Department of Justice for 14 years in various capacities, including as prosecutor in the district and regional courts. He also served as specialist prosecutor in occupational safety and Industrial matters.
He later served as magistrate in the criminal and civil courts for a period of 5 years. His service in the Department also included 3 years as legal officer, drafting legislation and providing general legal advice to the office of the Minister of Justice.
In 1998 Coen entered into private practice and has since been operating a labour law and commercial law practice, providing legal and workplace solutions in the fields of labour law, labour relations, dispute resolution, occupational health & safety, environmental and corporate law in a broad range of industries, and preside on a regular basis in disciplinary hearings.
Coen serves on various disciplinary committees of sport bodies, such as the Netball Grand Series and Valke Rugby Union, and has been involved in sports management for many years.
Coen currently serves on a panel of independent presiding officers appointed by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, and is a CCMA accredited panelist presiding in various bargaining councils, such as Meibc, ELRC and Transnet.
