John is a prolific writer on labour law. He left his position as Professor and Head of the Department of Law at Rhodes University to go into full-time practice as a specialist advocate at the end of 1997. His 25-year involvement in labour law has included acting as an additional member of the Industrial Court, a Senior Commissioner of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), an Independent Mediation Service of South Africa (IMSSA) panellist and an Acting Judge of the Labour and High Courts. He also assessed in many cases heard by the Labour Appeal Court, as constituted under the 1956 LRA.
Many of John's judgments and awards have been published. He has appeared as counsel in a number of important cases in the Labour and Labour Appeal Courts and the High Court. He is the author of the well-known text book Workplace Law (currently going into its 11th edition), and recently published quartet, Employment Rights, Dismissal, Collective Labour Law and Labour Litigation and Dispute Resolution and is contributing editor of the journal Employment Law and general editor of Butterworths Labour Law Reports and Butterworths Arbitration Labour Reports.
John is based in Grahamstown.
