Over the last 20 years Jonathan has earned an enviable reputation as arguably the pre-eminent leader in the field of Labour Law and Broad Based BEE consulting.
As an experienced businessman in the field of labour law and management, Jonathan offers legal advise, strategic direction, general business solutions, training and development, research reports and opinions, and assistance to various institutions. He has presided over numerous arbitrations and mediations nation-wide and has also lectured to over 2000 employers and employees in implementing employment equity legislation.
Jonathan schooled at Kingswood College in Grahamstown and matriculated in 1980 with full academic exemption. He later graduated from the University of Port Elizabeth (now the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) with a B.Comm degree) and an LL.B degree and went on to be awarded an Honours degree in Business Administration (HBA) (cum laude) and a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) degree (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch.
Jonathan started his business career at IDEC Financial Services where he joined as a consultant. He was appointed Managing Director soon after and eventually purchased the business in 1989. Jonathan rapidly expanded and diversified the business to include industrial relations services and, at the same time, founded Global Business Solutions, where he still holds the position of CEO. His strategic foresight has since been justified as Global Business Solutions has grown from one office employing 6 people into a leading national Labour Law, Human Resources, BBBEE and business consultancy with offices in East London (Head Office), Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
Jonathan was appointed a senior commissioner at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in 1996 and served on the mediation and arbitration panels at the Independent Mediation and Arbitration Services of South Africa (IMSSA) for 8 years before its closure in 2000. He was also an additional member of the Industrial Court from 1992 -2000.
Throughout his career, Jonathan has been involved with numerous blue chip clients and has become a respected voice on broad based black economic empowerment in which field he Co-authored “Cracking Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment” in 2005 (the first published authority in South Africa) and “Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment Final codes and scorecard” in 2008 (a complete rework to the first publication). Over and above consulting to a range of enterprises on black economic empowerment, Jonathan has facilitated various high profile BBBEE business transactions.
Over his career, Jonathan has compiled many publications such as a monthly labour law journal entitled the “Butterworths Law Reports” and has been the managing editor of “Employment Law” which is one of the largest labour law publications in the country since 1994/95.
