Julia spent two years in the human resources and labour fields industry, she then joined the Labour Relations Unit at NMMU (then UPE) in 1994 where she conducted research and lectured whilst completing a Masters Degree in Labour Relations. In 1997, Julia was appointed as a part-time Commissioner at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), where she continues to arbitrate disputes as a Senior Commissioner to date. She also serves on the arbitration panels of the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council, the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council and the Transnet Bargaining Council, and was previously a panellist for the Public Service Bargaining Council. Julia presides over internal disciplinary enquiries for various companies.
Julia is currently on the CCMA Training panel, and presents labour relations training courses for companies in her private capacity.
