Retief has over 20 years experience in the management and facilitation of conflict resolution processes and in development facilitation with communication, facilitation and training and development skills; and a record of achievement in facilitating change and development processes and in mediating and arbitrating disputes. During this time he served as regional director of the Consultative Business Movement (CBM) and the Western Cape Peace Committee and for the past 12 years worked as consultant in association with Mediation and Transformation Practice (MTP).
CBM as an organisation facilitated the establishment of NEDLAC (The National Development and Labour Council), and played a key facilitative role in the National Peace Accord and the CODESA political negotiation process that led to the first democratic elections in South Africa. He was seconded to the National Peace Secretariat and as Regional Director of the Western Cape Peace Committee established and managed the Western Cape Regional Structure.
As consultant he mediated in numerous types of conflicts, facilitated development processes, provided labour relations services i.e. conciliating and arbitrating disputes and facilitated organisational development and transformation processes. He has worked with numerous international funders, including projects funded by USAID and others. From 2005 – 2007 he managed the AED - Nepal Transition to Peace Initiative, a peace support program working with the key role-players in the political conflict in Nepal and he served as Country Director for Search for Common Ground in Zimbabwe in 2010-2011. He was appointed to the United Nations Mediation Roster in the UN Office for Political Affairs in 2013.
Retief is currently an associate with Mediation and Transformation Practice. (MTP) (1996 – Present). MTP is an African based conflict resolution and transformation service’s consultancy. He is a skilled and experienced mediator and arbitrator and is a part time panellist with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), Public Service Bargaining Councils, National Chemical Industries Bargaining Council, and the Africa Centre for Dispute Resolution.
Retief is based in Cape Town.
