Itumeleng joined Blakes Incorporated in Johannesburg in 1992 until 1994. The period served with the latter firm exposed him to civil litigation. Itumeleng worked at EFK Tucker Incorporated as an associate until he was admitted as a mediation and arbitration panellist by Independent Mediation Services of South Africa (IMSSA) in 1997.
Itumeleng has handled a large number of mediations and arbitrations. He has served as a commissioner with a number of bargaining councils. He facilitated collective agreement negotiations between South African Airways and Pilots’ Association. He further conducted a Relationship Building by Objectives exercise nationally between SAA and the two then recognised unions. Itumeleng managed national wage negotiations between Bromor Foods and Fawu.
Itumeleng was appointed by the Department of Transport, Gauteng, as a mediator when all taxi ranks within Johannesburg CBD and surrounding suburbs were closed due to taxi warfare. This mediation attracted unprecedented national print and electronic media attention on a daily basis. A durable settlement was procured with offences committed left to the dictates of the criminal justice system for resolution. He further conducted labour law related training countrywide for middle management at South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and Media Workers of South Africa. A similar induction was rendered to SAA Technical (Pty) Ltd, SATAWU and AWUSA.
Itumeleng presided in a number of recent high profile internal enquiries involving senior management at the Land and Development Bank of South Africa. Generally the arbitrations handled involved blue-chip companies, parastatals, government and a variety of prominent unions operating in those sectors.
