John is head of Herold Gie Attorneys Employment and Public Law Department, and until February 2009 headed up the Pension Law division in the firm. He became a member of the Independent Mediation Services of South Africa (IMSSA) arbitration panel in 1986; joined the mediation panel in 1990 and the training panel in 1991.
After IMSSA’s demise in 2000, he became a member of Tokiso’s panel from inception, in these capacities. He has mediated and arbitrated in a wide range of disputes, and is regularly appointed as arbitrator by the President of the Cape Law Society.
John was appointed as an assessor in the erstwhile Labour Appeal Court on a number of occasions and has served as an Acting Judge in the Labour Court on a number of occasions. He was a founding member and is a former joint Chair of the Western Cape Chapter of the SA Society for Labour Law (SASLAW) and has served as an elected member of its National Committee. He was appointed as SASLAW’s panel of experts in September 2006.
John was a long-standing member of the Cape Law Society’s Appropriate Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee. He currently stands as a member of the Cape Committee of the Pension Lawyers’ Association. John is listed in the PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook 2008 (and in previous editions) as a highly recommended individual in labour and employee benefits.
John has acted extensively in the public sector including for the Western Province, the City of Cape Town and other local authorities and also for a number of Bargaining Councils. He also serves as an independent trustee on a number of pension funds.
John is based in Cape Town.
