Chris is a practising attorney and director of the firm Bowman Gilfillan Inc. He was admitted to practise as an attorney in 1996.
During his career Chris has specialised in employment law and employee benefits, public and regulatory law, dispute resolution, and more recently in corporate mergers & acquisitions.
As a corporate lawyer, he has run a variety of transactions including the disposal of non-core businesses from a state transport utility, the disposal of shares in new and mature mining ventures, and the disposal of South African businesses of multinational companies as part of global transactions. In the course of his employment law and dispute resolution practices he has represented clients in High Court litigation over substantial public sector pension fund restructuring, involving several years of complex litigation and ADR; and in employment litigation at various levels including public and private employment law tribunals, in the Labour Court, Labour Appeal Court and Constitutional Court.
His dispute resolution career includes roles as adjudicator, having served as an acting Judge of the Labour Court and on private tribunals in employment disputes. His experience in commercial mediation includes both representing parties in mediations and serving as mediator or assistant mediator in commercial disputes. He was accredited by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) as a commercial mediator in April 2007.
Chris has published on various topics in employment law (Business Transfers and Employment Rights in South Africa, with du Toit & Bosch; Collective Bargaining Law and Contracts of Employment).
Chris is based in Johannesburg.
