Afzal is an admitted advocate in the Supreme Court of South Africa and a member of the Johannesburg Bar. His practice focuses on alternative dispute resolution and he has extensive experience as an arbitrator, mediator, facilitator and trainer for a number of organisations and associations and has dealt with numerous national disputes.
He is a part time Senior Commissioner for the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and a member of the National Training Panel responsible for training CCMA commissioners and bargaining council panellists. He is also a member of the National Dispute Resolution Panel responsible for dealing with national disputes as well as a member of the panel of numerous bargaining councils.
He also has widespread experience in conducting Relationship by Objective processes.
Afzal is the former chairperson of the Essential Services Committee.
His previous employment includes being a panellist at the Independent Mediation Services of South Africa (IMSSA), the Provincial Head of the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in the Free State as well as being a Senior Commissioner in Gauteng; and a member of the National Directorate of the CCMA, which is their highest decision-making body.
Afzal set as a member of the Johannesburg Council for 2004/2008; 2005/2006.
Afzal is a member of AFCA; Gauteng Management Committee and a member of its arbitration and mediation panel.
Afzal is a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) accredited mediator.
Afzal has also acted as a Judge in the Labour Court.
